Description

Pseudotsuga menziesii viridis – Green Douglas Fir

Quality: 1/1 1/2 P 20-40

Brief description: The Green Douglas Fir is the most productive forestry tree species in Central Europe – and far more than just a timber tree. With its imposing stature, aromatic needle foliage and high drought tolerance, it is also an excellent choice for large-scale parklands and prestigious specimen plantings. The variety viridis (Green Coastal form) is significantly more winter-hardy than the Blue Mountain form.

Climatic characteristics & site requirements: The Douglas Fir is already established in forestry in many areas of Southern Germany – particularly in the Black Forest, Palatinate Forest and Bavarian Forest – and is considered one of the main tree species in climate-adapted forest conversion. It tolerates drought and heat well, but requires deep, well-drained soils. It fails on shallow calcareous sites or in waterlogged conditions. Very storm-resistant due to deep taproot system.

Advantages: Very fast growth, excellent drought tolerance, aromatic needle foliage, storm-resistant, valuable for forestry and landscaping, winter-hardy.

Disadvantages: Large space requirement, unsuitable for calcareous and waterlogged soils, not native (ecologically rated lower than spruce or fir), needle litter acidifies soils, completely unsuitable for small gardens.
