Description
Abies alba – Silver Fir
Quality: 2/2 P
Brief description: The Silver Fir is Central Europe’s native fir and one of the most imposing conifer species of all – with a straight columnar trunk, densely set branches, and the eponymous whitish underside of the needles. As a characteristic tree of the Black Forest, the Alps, and the Bavarian Forest, it represents near-natural forests and untouched mountain landscapes. It is ecologically valuable – many specialized insect and fungus species depend on it.
Climatic properties & site conditions: The Silver Fir specializes in fresh, humid mountain locations where it is unrivaled – the Black Forest, Bavarian Forest, Allgäu, and the Alpine foothills are its natural habitats. It requires deep, fresh soils and is sensitive to prolonged summer droughts. In warmer lowlands and on shallow soils, it increasingly suffers from climate stress. Game browsing is the greatest practical problem when cultivating young firs.
Advantages: Native and ecologically first-class, imposing habit, very long-lived, dense evergreen crown, robust and easy to care for in suitable locations, excellent wood.
Disadvantages: Sensitive to summer drought and heat in lowlands, highly susceptible to browsing by roe and red deer, slow juvenile growth, large space requirement, not suitable for dry or warm sites.
