Description
Acer pseudoplatanus – Sycamore Maple
Quality: 1/2 P
Short description: The sycamore maple is the largest-crowned native maple – a stately forest tree with an imposing canopy, large five-lobed leaves, and a delicate yellow-green veil of blossoms in spring. In autumn, the foliage displays muted yellow and brown tones. As a specimen tree in parks and large gardens, as an avenue tree, or at the edge of forests, it is a proven native choice with high ecological value.
Climatic characteristics & site conditions: The sycamore maple is native throughout southern Germany and is particularly typical of the montane regions of the Black Forest, the Alps, and the Bavarian Forest – still growing without issue at altitudes of up to 1,500 m. It prefers fresh, nutrient-rich soils and tolerates both acidic and calcareous substrates. On dry, shallow soils and during prolonged hot summers, it shows increasing drought stress. In mountain regions and fresh valley locations, it is exceptionally robust.
Advantages: Native and ecologically valuable, highly adaptable to many soils, lime-tolerant, imposing crown, fast growth, suitable even for harsh high altitudes, valuable timber.
Disadvantages: Requires significant space, seeds germinate in large numbers, increasingly susceptible in dry locations, sooty bark disease is a growing problem, not suitable for small gardens or dry, warm locations.
