Description
Common Aspen (Populus tremula)
Quality: 80-120 P (In pot)
The Common Aspen – also known as Quaking Aspen – is the fastest-growing native deciduous tree species and an ecological powerhouse. Its characteristic leaf shimmering in the wind makes it unmistakable. Hard to beat for nature conservation, rapid greening, and pioneer sites.
Climatic Characteristics & Site Conditions:
As a pioneer tree species, it copes with almost all site conditions in Southern Germany – from the plains up to 1,500 m altitude. It tolerates frost, drought, and poor soils. It plays an increasingly important role in the climate adaptation of forests.
Advantages: Enormously fast growth, extremely valuable ecologically (over 100 insect species dependent), pioneer for fallow land, early flowering for bees, attractive golden foliage in autumn, forms root suckers (natural spreading).
Disadvantages: Root suckers can become problematic in gardens; unsuitable for small plots; wood is not very durable and therefore of limited forestry interest; strong spreading through root runners.
