Description

Quercus pubescens – Downy Oak

Quality: 1/0 P 10+

Brief Description: The Downy Oak is the oak of warmth and drought – making it one of the most climate-resilient native tree species. Its softly hairy leaves, picturesque irregular growth, and deep root system make it a distinctive solitary plant for sunny, barren slopes. Ecologically, as a native oak, it is a biodiversity hotspot – hundreds of insect, fungal, and bird species rely on oaks.

Climatic Properties & Site Conditions: The Downy Oak is native to the warmest regions of Southern Germany – Kaiserstuhl, Hegau, Taubertal, Main valleys, and warm-tempered slopes of the Swabian Jura. It tolerates extreme summer drought, calcareous soils, and south-facing exposures better than any other native oak species. With climate change, its natural distribution area in Southern Germany will continue to expand – it is the oak of the future for dry sites.

Advantages: Exceptional drought and heat tolerance, native and ecologically valuable, lime-tolerant, picturesque growth, very long-lived, ideal climate change tree species.

Disadvantages: Very slow growth, unsuitable for moist or waterlogged soils, rare and more expensive in trade, not a tree for structured or formal garden design, requires ample space in old age.
