Description

Acer monspessulanum – French Maple

Quality: 1/1 P 50-80

Brief description: The French Maple is the smallest and least known of the native maple species – and at the same time the most drought-tolerant. With its three-lobed, glossy dark green foliage, compact growth, and fine autumn colors in yellow and orange, it is an elegant solitary plant for dry, warm locations. As a tree or multi-stemmed large shrub, it remains manageable in size and is also suitable for smaller gardens.

Climatic properties & site conditions: The French Maple is native to the warmest and driest regions of Southern Germany – Kaiserstuhl, Hegau, Taubertal, and the warm-toned limestone slopes of the Swabian Jura are its natural distribution area. It tolerates summer drought, heat, and calcareous soils excellently, making it one of the most climate-resilient native tree species. With climate change, its range of application in Southern Germany will continue to expand.

Advantages: Exceptional drought and heat tolerance, native, lime-tolerant, compact growth suitable for smaller gardens, easy to care for, attractive glossy foliage, future-proof climate change tree species.

Disadvantages: Very rare and more expensive in trade, slow growth, not suitable for moist or waterlogged soils, little known and therefore rarely used, not a shade tree due to its sparse crown.
