Description

Abies grandis – grand fir

Quality: 1/1 P

Short description: The grand fir from the Pacific Northwest of North America is the fastest-growing fir species under Central European conditions—and releases an intense orange and citrus scent when you rub the needles. This distinctive fragrance and its rapid, even growth make it a special choice for parks and large gardens. The needles are glossy dark green with whitish stripes on the underside.

Climatic characteristics & site conditions: The grand fir prefers fresh, deep, well-drained soils and tolerates both acidic and moderately calcareous substrates. In southern Germany it grows particularly well in the more humid areas of the Black Forest, Allgäu and Bavarian Forest. On dry, shallow soils it grows significantly more slowly and shows drought damage. Hardy down to −25 °C. It does not tolerate waterlogging.

Advantages: Very fast growth, characteristic citrus scent, attractive foliage, hardy, suitable for various soils, impressive habit.

Disadvantages: Not native, requires a lot of space, problematic on dry soils, does not tolerate waterlogging, no ecological value for native fauna, very large when mature.
