Description

Abies procera ‘Moelleskoven’ – Pacific Noble Fir

Quality: 2/3 P

Brief Description: The Pacific Noble Fir is the most exquisite among North American firs – featuring striking blue-green, upward-curving needles, an elegant conical crown, and impressive, large cones that stand upright in the crown. The cultivar ‘Moelleskoven’ is a proven, uniformly growing selection with particularly beautiful foliage. It is an absolute eye-catcher as a solitary specimen in parks and large gardens.

Climatic Characteristics & Site Conditions: The Noble Fir prefers cool, moist locations with high humidity – in southern Germany, it thrives best in the high altitudes of the Black Forest, the Allgäu, and the Bavarian Forest. It develops best in acidic, fresh, and deep soils. It tolerates calcareous sites and prolonged summer drought poorly. Winter hardy down to –25 °C. In warmer lowlands, it is more susceptible to spider mites and drought stress.

Advantages: Exceptionally decorative blue-green foliage, impressive cones, uniform growth of the ‘Moelleskoven’ cultivar, winter hardy, attractive solitary plant.

Disadvantages: Not native, unsuitable for warm and dry lowlands, no calcareous soils, requires ample space, susceptible to spider mites in heat, rare in trade.
