Description

Zelkova serrata – Japanese Zelkova

Quality: 1/1 P

Brief Description: The Japanese Zelkova is an elegant deciduous tree with a broad, vase-shaped crown and finely serrated, dark green foliage. In autumn, the leaves glow in vibrant orange and red. With its urban climate resilience and drought tolerance, it is considered one of the most promising tree species for climate change – a future-proof tree for gardens and public green spaces.

Climatic Characteristics & Site Conditions: The Zelkova tolerates heat, drought, and compacted soils significantly better than many native deciduous trees – an important characteristic given the increasingly dry summers in the Upper Rhine Plain, the Stuttgart region, or Franconia. It is winter-hardy down to approximately –25 °C and thrives in southern German locations. It develops its full potential in fresh, deep soils but also tolerates poor urban soils.

Advantages: Excellent drought and heat tolerance, beautiful autumn foliage, urban climate resilient, wind-stable due to deep root system, long-lived, few pest problems.

Disadvantages: Requires ample space (up to 15 m width), frost-sensitive in the young plant stage, still relatively rare in German trade and thus more expensive, not a tree for small gardens.
