Description

Tilia cordata – Small-leaved Lime

Quality: 1/2 P 50-80

Brief Description: The Small-leaved Lime is one of the most valuable native deciduous trees – ecologically, culturally, and aesthetically. In June and July, its intense floral scent attracts masses of bees; no other tree offers a comparable nectar and pollen source during its main flowering period. Its heart-shaped foliage is delicate and casts a dense, pleasant shade. As an avenue tree, solitary specimen, or village centerpiece, the Small-leaved Lime has been indispensable for centuries.

Climatic Characteristics & Site Conditions: The Small-leaved Lime is native to all of Southern Germany and is excellently adapted – from the Rhine plain to altitudes of over 1,000 m. It tolerates both fresh and moderately dry soils and is insensitive to lime. In recent years, it has suffered from increasing drought stress in particularly hot, dry locations – however, it remains robust and long-lived in fresh, deep soils.

Advantages: Native and ecologically valuable, outstanding bee pasture, long-lived tree, easily shaped and tolerant of pruning, beautiful shade, lime-tolerant.

Disadvantages: Increasingly susceptible to drought stress and aphid infestation in very dry locations, honeydew drip can soil vehicles and furniture, requires ample space, slow juvenile growth.
