Description

Betula pendula – Silver Birch

Quality: 1/2 P 50-80

Brief Description: The Silver Birch is the epitome of a native pioneer woody plant – with bright white bark, gracefully drooping branches, and an airy, light crown that is attractive in every season. In spring, it sprouts early with fresh light green leaves, and in autumn, its foliage glows golden yellow. As a fast-growing, low-maintenance tree for natural gardens, it is unbeatable – and ecologically one of the most valuable native tree species.

Climatic Properties & Site Conditions: The Silver Birch is native throughout Southern Germany and extremely adaptable – from the Rhine plain to mountainous regions over 1,000 m. It prefers acidic, sandy to loamy, and well-drained soils; for wet or waterlogged sites, the Downy Birch is the better choice. It tolerates drought better than the Downy Birch but suffers in prolonged hot summers on very shallow soils. Very winter-hardy and tolerant of late frosts.

Advantages: Native and ecologically excellent, white bark attractive year-round, fast growth, low maintenance, more drought-tolerant than Downy Birch, supports over 500 insect species.

Disadvantages: No waterlogging, significant pollen count relevant for allergies, relatively short-lived (60–80 years), roots can affect pipes and paving, not a woody plant for waterlogged soils.
