Description
Larix decidua – European Larch
Quality: P 20-40
Brief description: The European Larch is the only native conifer that sheds its needles in autumn – with an impressive display of vibrant golden colors. In spring, it sprouts with delicate green, soft needle clusters; in summer, it casts a light, airy shade; in autumn, it glows golden. Its cones remain on the tree for up to ten years and are a decorative feature visible all year round.
Climatic properties & site conditions: The Larch is a mountain tree native to the Alps, making it ideally suited for cool, fresh mountain regions of Southern Germany – the Alpine foothills, Allgäu, and Hochschwarzwald. It loves sun, fresh air, and well-drained soils; waterlogging and humid lowlands are not suitable. In warm lowlands, it is more susceptible to larch canker and fungal diseases. Very winter-hardy, it tolerates extreme cold and late frosts without problems.
Advantages: Native to the Alpine region, spectacular autumn gold, light-permeable crown, very winter-hardy, decorative cones, rapid growth in youth, ecologically valuable.
Disadvantages: Unsuitable for warm and humid lowlands, susceptible to larch canker in unfavorable locations, deciduous (not evergreen), requires ample space, needle litter slightly acidifies soils.
