Description

Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi)

Quality: 20-40

The Japanese larch is a fast-growing, decorative conifer with blue-green needles and warm golden yellow in autumn – the only domestically cultivated conifer that sheds its foliage. An attractive choice for both forestry and gardens.

Climatic Properties & Site Conditions:
Utilized in forestry for decades in the Black Forest, Bavarian Forest, and the Alpine foothills. More robust than the European larch against larch canker, but more susceptible to summer drought on shallow soils.

Advantages: Fast-growing, attractive autumn display, valuable, durable wood, good storm resistance, light-loving, and suitable for open spaces.

Disadvantages: Requires plenty of space, unsuitable for small gardens; suffers on dry southern slopes during dry summers; not for urban climates or sealed soils.
