Description
Arborvitae ‘Smaragd’ (Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’)
Quality: 80-150
The hornbeam is the most natural hedging and topiary plant in Central Europe. Its strength: As a hedge, it often retains its brown foliage until spring – providing year-round privacy. A true all-rounder for gardens and landscapes.
Climatic Properties & Site Conditions:
Absolutely native and adapted, from the Rhine plain to montane regions. Tolerates both dry periods and moist sites, loam and clay soils, and can therefore be planted without hesitation throughout the Southwest and Bavaria.
Advantages: Ecologically very valuable (bird nesting sites, food source), tolerant to pruning, winter-hardy without restriction, marcescent foliage = privacy even in winter, non-toxic, native.
Disadvantages: Grows slower than, for example, privet; less suitable for the impatient. Weaker growth in shade; must be pruned regularly in the first few years to become dense.
