Description

Turkey oak (Quercus cerris)

Quality: 15-30

Turkey oak is one of Europe’s most climate-resilient oak species. With deeply lobed, distinctive leaves and an impressive growth habit, it is a real highlight—both in parks and in forestry reforestation.

Climatic characteristics & site conditions:
It tolerates drought, heat and poor soils far better than the native pedunculate or sessile oak and is considered an important climate-change tree species in forestry circles for the southwest. Particularly interesting for the dry areas of Franconia, the Palatinate and northern Baden-Württemberg.

Advantages: Very drought-tolerant, fast-growing for an oak, high ecological value (many insect species), storm-resistant thanks to a deep root system, attractive autumn colour.

Disadvantages: Less widespread than pedunculate oak, wood less valuable. Acorns and oak galls may self-seed, which means a bit of maintenance in gardens.
