Description
Platanus orientalis – Plane Tree
Brief description: The plane tree is the classic urban tree of Europe – large-crowned, shade-giving, and remarkably long-lived. Its characteristic mottled bark in grey, green, and creamy white makes it unmistakable. With its broad, arching crown, it provides dense shade in summer and has shaped avenues, market squares, and parks across Southern and Central Europe for centuries.
Climatic characteristics & site conditions: The plane tree is exceptionally heat- and drought-tolerant, making it one of the most future-proof urban tree species for the increasingly warm regions of Europe. It thrives on almost all well-drained soils and tolerates soil compaction and road salt better than most other large trees. It has already proven itself in the Rhine Plain, the Stuttgart area, and Franconian towns. It avoids waterlogging and permanently wet soils.
Advantages: Excellent heat and drought tolerance, resilient to urban climate, impressive shade coverage, attractive bark, long-lived, salt-tolerant, suitable for many soil types.
Disadvantages: Requires a very large amount of space – not suitable for private home gardens, leaves and fruit balls produce a lot of autumn leaf litter, hairs from the fruit balls can cause respiratory irritation, not native.
