Description

Pinus ponderosa – Ponderosa Pine / Yellow Pine

Quality: 1/1 P

Brief description: The Ponderosa Pine from western North America is one of the most impressive pine species of all – with long needles in clusters of three, a characteristic orange-yellow bark in maturity, and a straight, stately growth up to 40 m. Still rare in Germany, it is becoming increasingly interesting as a climate-resistant specimen tree for parks and arboreta. The trunk emits an unmistakable vanilla scent in warm weather.

Climatic characteristics & site requirements: The Ponderosa Pine tolerates extreme drought and heat better than almost any other pine species – in its native habitat it grows on the driest mountain sites in North America. This makes it highly interesting for the increasingly dry regions of southwestern Germany. Winter hardy to approx. –25 °C. It prefers deep, well-drained soils; it does not tolerate waterlogging and compaction. Still little tested for southern Germany – but promising as a specimen and climate change tree species.

Advantages: Exceptional drought tolerance, impressive habit with vanilla scent, attractive bark, winter hardy, climate-resilient for the future, rare and distinctive.

Disadvantages: Not native, no ecological value for native fauna, hardly tested in Germany (little long-term experience), large space requirement, no waterlogging tolerance, very rare in trade.
