Description

Quercus cerris – Turkey Oak

Short description: The Turkey Oak is one of the most vigorous and heat-tolerant oak species for Central European conditions – with rapid juvenile growth that significantly exceeds native oaks. The deeply lobed, dark green foliage and characteristic fringed, bristly acorn cups make it unmistakable. As a specimen or park tree, it makes an impressive statement even at a young age.

  • Growth height up to 35 m
  • Drought tolerant
  • Nutrient-poor and moderately acidic soils
  • Good timber quality
  • Rapid juvenile growth
  • Frost sensitive

Climatic properties & site conditions: The Turkey Oak originates from the dry, warm oak forests of Southern Europe and is therefore excellently adapted to heat and summer drought – one of the most climate-resilient oak species for the warming regions of Southern Germany. It grows on acidic to neutral, well-drained soils; it avoids highly calcareous sites. Hardy down to –20 °C. For the Rhine Plain, Franconian warm regions, and the Stuttgart area, it is a decidedly future-proof choice.

Advantages: Fast growth, excellent heat and drought tolerance, attractive deeply lobed foliage, imposing crown, future-proof as a climate-change tree species, ecologically valuable.

Disadvantages: Non-native – lower ecological value than native oaks, less suitable for highly calcareous soils, large space requirement, not yet widely distributed in Germany and rare in trade, not a shrub for small gardens.
